As you search through all the websites and profiles of numerous photographers, trying to discover that right wedding style photography to suit you. You will find a multitude of different techniques utilised by various photographers. Where the flair and imagination of the images remain fairly unique to the individual photographer the style of the actual Wedding Shoot really comes down to mainly just two.

The first is the Traditional Style. We have all seen this one and are overly familiar with it. Every wedding album has these photos where everyone is all neatly organised, all in a row. Everyone in their little packages, all the Bride’s family, all the Groom’s family, all the friends, all the Aunts etc and so on. Where this is all well and good to make sure you get absolutely everyone and no one is left out after about 45mins it can get rather monotonous .(but in many cases necessary as you don’t want to forget great Aunt Nora.)

In contrast to this a slightly different take is becoming more and more popular. That of the Reportage Wedding.

Here the photographer takes a back seat almost, and captures moments as they unfold. Catching people off guard in their natural states and in the emotion of the event. At least that is the theory.

In reality it is a mixture of captured moments as well as those carefully orchestrated staged photos.

This will sadly be necessary as the bride and groom will always want a photo of everything. So a mixture of both Reportage and Traditional will be inevitable.

How the photographer manages to go about this task is down to them and their own personality. Some like to command and will get everyone organised in their nice groups. Where others will hide in the shadows and catch the magic. However you need to make sure the photographer is absolutely sure he knows what you want. It would be unfair to ask for a Reportage Wedding and then complain after that there was no direction from the photographer. This can be where ushers and in many cases mothers can get involved and be handy. They generally love to organise and can help in pushing the right people in front of the camera at the given time.

So when all is said and done it is usually a combination of these two styles that make it into the all important album. In a lot of cases that is why there is more than one photographer at a wedding. Either way it is important to be sure what style you would ultimately prefer.
